Quantity guidance

Measure the length and width of the area and the desired material depth. For irregular areas, divide the project into smaller sections and measure each one. A phone can help collect approximate measurements—iPhones include the Measure app, and similar measuring apps are available for other phones. Measure landscape-bed area and desired depth. Allow for settling and for replenishing existing mulch where coverage is thin. Use the Product Finder Quiz if you are still choosing a material, then estimate your quantity.

Delivery preparation

Choose a firm, level dump location with enough room for the driver to enter, raise the truck bed, unload, and leave safely. Check for low tree limbs, overhead power or communication lines, gates, narrow entrances, soft ground, steep slopes, and tight turns. Identify anything hidden beneath the route or dumping area, including septic tanks and drain fields, irrigation lines, pipes, culverts, utility lines, recently filled trenches, and other breakable structures. Dump trucks are extremely heavy and may crack concrete or asphalt, especially when crossing edges or leaving the paved surface. The driver makes the final decision about whether the requested location can be reached safely. Prepare beds before pickup and use a tarp or suitable cover for transport. Choose a clean unloading area close to the beds.
