Kaolin material

Product overview

Fine natural clay for fill, grading, blending, and other clay-based applications.

What the material is

Kaolin is a naturally occurring fine clay material. It has a smooth texture, a light color, and different handling characteristics from ordinary fill dirt or topsoil.

How GLWD supplies it

GLWD supplies natural kaolin in bulk for pickup or delivery.

When not to use it

Kaolin is not a free-draining material and can become slick or difficult to work when wet. It should not be selected where clean drainage stone, washed sand, screened planting soil, or a compactable driveway surface would be more appropriate.

Pickup and delivery

Bulk pickup or scheduled dump truck delivery. Confirmed when ordering.

Truck and load options

Available in GLWD load sizes appropriate to the requested quantity and site access.

Quantity guidance

Measure the length and width of the area and the desired material depth. For irregular areas, divide the project into smaller sections and measure each one. A phone can help collect approximate measurements—iPhones include the Measure app, and similar measuring apps are available for other phones. Because kaolin can compact and moisture affects how it handles, tell GLWD how the material will be used when requesting a quote. Use the Product Finder Quiz if you are still choosing a material, then estimate your quantity.

Delivery preparation

Choose a firm, level dump location with enough room for the driver to enter, raise the truck bed, unload, and leave safely. Check for low tree limbs, overhead power or communication lines, gates, narrow entrances, soft ground, steep slopes, and tight turns. Identify anything hidden beneath the route or dumping area, including septic tanks and drain fields, irrigation lines, pipes, culverts, utility lines, recently filled trenches, and other breakable structures. Dump trucks are extremely heavy and may crack concrete or asphalt, especially when crossing edges or leaving the paved surface. The driver makes the final decision about whether the requested location can be reached safely. Consider how the clay will be moved or spread after delivery. Avoid saturated dumping areas because kaolin may be harder to handle when wet.
