Stone & Aggregate

#4 Stone

Large crushed stone for drainage, stabilization, and heavy base applications.

#4 Stone material

Product overview

Large crushed stone for drainage, stabilization, and heavy base applications.

What the material is

A large crushed granite aggregate with open spaces between the individual stones. It provides drainage and can create a strong lower layer when used with the right supporting materials.

How GLWD supplies it

Sourced crushed stone supplied by local granite quarries.

When not to use it

#4 Stone alone does not make a good finished road or driveway surface. The large spaces between the stones allow the material to shift under traffic. It works better as a lower base topped with Crusher Run or another material that can lock together and compact.

Pickup and delivery

Pickup at Pit 421 or dump truck delivery. Confirmed when ordering.

Truck and load options

Available for pickup or delivery in all GLWD load sizes. GLWD can help match the truck and load size to the amount needed, delivery distance, and access at the property.

Quantity guidance

Measure the length and width of the area and the desired material depth. For irregular areas, divide the project into smaller sections and measure each one. A phone can help collect approximate measurements—iPhones include the Measure app, and similar measuring apps are available for other phones. Allow for the large stone size and the intended installed depth. Use the Product Finder Quiz if you are still choosing a material, then estimate your quantity.

Delivery preparation

Choose a firm, level dump location with enough room for the driver to enter, raise the truck bed, unload, and leave safely. Check for low tree limbs, overhead power or communication lines, gates, narrow entrances, soft ground, steep slopes, and tight turns. Identify anything hidden beneath the route or dumping area, including septic tanks and drain fields, irrigation lines, pipes, culverts, utility lines, recently filled trenches, and other breakable structures. Dump trucks are extremely heavy and may crack concrete or asphalt, especially when crossing edges or leaving the paved surface. The driver makes the final decision about whether the requested location can be reached safely. For road or driveway work, plan a compactable top layer because #4 Stone alone will shift under traffic.

Best uses

  • Drainage areas
  • Construction entrances
  • Stabilization over soft ground
  • Erosion-control projects
  • Heavy base beneath smaller compactable stone
